To outsiders, Rainbow Jones seems like a shy young woman with no friends. She spends her days in Central Park, where she visits with her "imaginary family," an assorted group of animal characters who cajole, argue and guide her. One day in the park, Rainbow is interrupted by Joey, a jogger who takes a fancy to her. Eventually he learns about Rainbow's secret friends. At first he thinks she's crazy. "There must be some psychological explanation!" That statement is truer than he realizes, for as the story unfolds we discover that the animals each, in fact, represent a member of her family lost in a tragic accident. Through her relationship with Joey, she is able to face the truth and give up her fantasy world.
